  Finding your IP address
Posted by: TechnicalSuwako - 10-29-2017, 07:43 AM - Forum: Tutorials - Replies (1)

A lot of you got issues finding the right IP address for SM64O/Net64(+).
Follow these simple steps, and avoid handing out the wrong address.

IPv4 vs IPv6, and localhost vs private IP vs public IP vs more
Before I get into finding your IP, I will need to explain a few little things.

An IPv4 address consists of 4 units of 32-bit decimal integers, meaning the value can be anything between 0 and 255.
You cannot have an IPv4 address that has at least 1 unit below 0, or above 255.

An IPv6 address consists of 8 units of 128-bit hexadecimal integers, meaning the value can be anything between 0000 and FFFF.
IPv6 is meant to replace IPv4 for decades, since the amount of available IPv4 addresses compared to the amount of network enabled devices is getting very limited.
As I said, IPv4 is 32-bit, while IPv6 is 128-bit, so way and way more IPv6 addresses can be issued out than IPv4.
However, SM64O and Net64+ only support IPv4, so we'll continue this tutorial with IPv4.

Another thing to know is that not every IP address can be used.

Connecting to 127.0.0.1 will connect to yourself, because 127.0.0.1 is a reserved IP which we call localhost.
Localhost is simply yourself.

Connecting to 10.x.x.x172.16.x.x, or 192.168.x.x (x = any number) will only work if all players are on the exact same router (and therefore, are located in the exact same home in most cases).
This is what we call a private network.

Connecting to 169.254.x.x (x = any number) will not work at all, because that's the IP you get when you have an issue with your network.
Normally happens when multiple computers try to use the exact same private IP address, this is what we call IP conflict.

A full list of such IP addresses can be found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reserved_IP_addresses

Finding your private IP
If you're playing with multiple people on the same network (like at your friends' home, or at a LAN party), you will want to use this IP address.
An advantage is that there's no need for port forwarding using this method.
A disadvantage is that nobody who's using a different network can join you (unless you set up something like Hamachi, this tutorial will not talk about that).

Linux:
Many Linux distributions come with a tool called "ifconfig", but not all of them.
On the other hand, "ip addr" is a globally accepted command to find your private IP address.
If you're using WiFi, look at the section that starts with "wlp", if you're using Ethernet, look at the section that starts with "enp", in both cases, your IPv4 will be under the "inet" section.

macOS:
On the other hand, macOS does not have an "ip addr" command, but instead uses "ifconfig".
In that case, look at what starts with "en", and then under "inet".

Windows:
On Windows, the command is "ipconfig", so with a "p" instead of an "f".
I haven't used Windows at all for almost a whole year now, so I'm not too sure how things look like on that end.

Finding your public IP
This is the IP you want to share with players outside your home.
The advantage is that finding this IP address is even easier.
The disadvantage is that you will need to set up port forwarding (not covered in this tutorial).

Simply go to this page, and your answer is right in front of you.

That's all there is.
Enjoy!
